Spring 1972, Bay Area, California: a young photographer is starting out on what was to become one of the photographic projects of greatest influence on the 20th-century collective imagination.

30th May 2012, Isola Neighbourhood, Milan: 40 years after that unforgettable experience, AREA LINA ovunqueartecontemporanea will dedicate its first monographic show to the SUBURBIA cycle of works by Bill Owens, one of the greatest post-war American photographers. This will be only the beginning of a series of celebrations commemorating this 40th anniversary, with a number of international exhibitions in various cities.

AREA LINA ovunqueartecontemporanea is a new mobile exhibition project, with no fixed place, directed by Gianmaria Conti, which will feature an annual programme of exhibitions on contemporary art and photography, to be hosted in an ever-changing range of spaces, both in Italy and abroad. Following the experience of other international exhibition practices, the chosen spaces are normally used for other purposes, or have fallen into disuse. In this specific case, it is an unused art&craft laboratory in the Isola neighbourhood of Milan. The area around the Garibaldi Railway Station, is in fact home to wide-ranging social and urban planning transformations; similar to that which took place in the San Francisco Bay Area between the end of World War II and the '80s, with the foundation of the famous 'Levitt Towns' described in Owens's images.

The exhibition will feature a selection of more than 50 images by the most relevant works from Suburbia. Those images which made Bill Owens the photographer of the American Way of  Life in the '70s and '80s, of that lifestyle which was to become the symbolic and cultural benchmark for the rest of the world. Neighbours, friends, relatives, teachers, pupils and shopkeepers are just some of the characters in this new depiction of American society which the artist pieces together in his fresco.

Owens deploys a kind of 'visual anthropology' through the inescapable urgency of need. We must acknowledge a lot more to this artist than merely his photographs, for just like those on the Normandy Invasion by Robert Capa or those on the Great Depression of the '30s by Walker Evans, his are the conceptual tools, the visual references and panoramas through which we may imagine and get to know that particular universe of sense, that way of living and structuring society that typified the urbanization of the West Coast of the United States at that time.
Cinema, architecture, sociology and politics all owe some of their language to the topics and images of Bill Owens. Sofia Coppola, David Byrne and Martin Parr are but a few of the artists whose imagery is declaredly inspired by Owens's photography.

Bill Owens was born in 1938 in San Josè, California, and rose to fame in 1972 thanks to Suburbia and a number of other monographic publications on the customs of the American middle class. A collector of folk art and Pop memorabilia, he is keen on food, classic cars, and for many years he has been editor of American Brewer, a magazine dedicated to the brewing industry. Owens was one of the first photography artists to be awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. His works have been exhibited throughout the world.

His main exhibitions include those at the San Francisco MOMA; San Josè Museum of Art; Salon de la Photo, Paris; Centre Photographic de l'Ile de France; Robert Koch Gallery, San Francisco; Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle; Howard Greenberg and Matthew Marks Galleries, New York; Eyestorm Gallery, London; Photo Espana, Madrid; International Center for Photography, New York; the Carla Sozzani Gallery, Milan; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; James Cohan Gallery, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

Gdansk, Poland / Stefano Cagol: Flower Fear - Sleep Terror

On the Night of Museums, Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art presents FLOWER FEAR - SLEEP TERROR, the first intervention in Poland by the Italian artist Stefano Cagol.

This installation – specifically conceived for the site – connects all the floors of the centre in a reflection on personal fears and collective fears. Visitors of the institution are involved in experiencing the ascending/descending spiral as a metaphor of actual chronic behaviors and reactions influenced by the media, public opinion, politics, economy, and prejudices. By physical and mental borders.

"People manipulated by TV news, politics, market, etc. are like people who are asleep because they trust in what they hear. And this happens mechanically because we just need to trust somebody; the question 'who
should we trust' sounds banal." – Kamila Wielebska

Stefano Cagol's installation is realized on the occasion of the presentation at Laznia CCA of his monograph in which Kamila Wielebska – among more-than-twenty art professionals – is part of an extended conversation
with the artist. The monograph titled PUBLIC OPINION is edited by Andrea Viliani (2011, CHARTA, Milan, 232 pages, paperback, 30 x 23 cm, ISBN 978-88-8158-820-6).

Kamila Wielebska is an art critic and curator, and an editor-in-chief of Intertekst published by Laznia CCA:

Stefano Cagol – who realized the solo show CONCILIO at San Gallo Church as a part of the 2011 Venice Biennale – is opening the Media Façade Program 2012 of MUSEION – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Bolzano, May 16, 23, 24, 30, 10:00 pm –12:00 am, curated by Frida Carazzato;

Barcelona, Catalonia / Antoni Tàpies. The Collection, # 3

28 April – 10 June 2012
Antoni Tàpies. The Collection, # 3
Fundació Antoni Tàpies

The Fundació presents a new selection of works by Antoni Tàpies belonging to the Collection. The show, displayed on this occasion in Spaces A and B, includes different moments in the artist's creative career from the 1940s to the present, and illustrates the evolution of his typologies, techniques and materials.

The visit begins with a selection of earlier works in which two opposing procedures can be seen: on the one hand, the interest in extra-pictorial materials and the density of matter, noticeable in the works of 1946 and 1947 such as Zoom (1964) and Newspaper Cross (1946-7); on the other, the tendency towards surrealism, which in the case of Tàpies suggests influences of Joan Miró, Paul Klee and Max Ernst, visible in works such as Parafaragamus (1949) or the series of drawings Natural History Series (1950-1951). Tàpies reaches the stage of maturity in the biennium 1954-1955 with works that recover the initial interest in matter and its stages of formation and deformation, the so called matter paintings, works such as Large Matter with Lateral Papers (1963) and Grey, Orange and Pink (1967), among others. The exhibition also features works from the end of the 1960s and 1970s, in which, on the one hand, the artist incorporates the object - appreciable in works such as Chair and Clothes (1970) and Wood and Windows (1976) -, and, on the other, expresses its political vocation, visible on a canvas of 1976 created in memory of the activist Oriol Solé i Sugranyes, killed by the Guardia Civil after he fled the prison in Segovia in April of that year (Composition with Numbers). The exhibition continues with works from the 1980s, characterized by the general use of varnish (Evil Painters, 1988, a work that refers to the writer, philosopher, mystic and theologian of the thirteenth century Majorcan Ramon Llull; Diptych in Varnish, 1984) and the use of refractory clay (Trainer, 1986; Block with signs, 1988; Heap of Earth, 1989), and closes with a sample of recent pieces which confirms the interest of Tàpies in the images of everyday environment (Two Chairs, 2009) and by the nature of art (Land of Shadow I, 1988).

The visit ends with the screening of the documentary Tàpies (1969), by Clovis Prévost, produced by Maeght, Paris, projected in the Auditorium of the Fundació (Space C).

Marseille, France / Frédéric Clavère - Tintin à Auschwitz

Frédéric Clavère : Tintin à Auschwitz
Exposition du 02 au 14 avril 2012
Vernissage le lundi 02 à partir de 18h30

Cher Bernard,

Barcelona, Catalonia / Swab 2012

Swab Barcelona will gather around 60 galleries from around the world between May 23th and May 26th of 2012 in Barcelona. SWAB was founded in 2006 by Joaquin Diez-Cascón, Marina Diez-Cascón and Fernando Rial from Barcelona and with the support of renowned national and International galleries.  This great cultural event also has the support of the City of Barcelona and the Generalitat de Catalunya.

SWAB was conceived out of the collections' desire to affect positive cultural change through Contemporary Art. The four day Art Fair and it's satellite events fulfil a number of social objectives with a programme that creates a cultural bridge between Catalunya and the rest of the world.

Swab brings together a carefully curated selection of participating international galleries, chosen because they focus on presenting works by younger, emerging, contemporary art stars – most of who were born after the 1970′s.  Swab is a highly respected Art platform, built to give this new generation of artists the opportunity to have their work seen by members of the public, and the global art community, including: leading art collectors, dealers, press and curators. In return, Swab ensures that everyone is given the chance to enjoy these wonderful pieces, works that normally would not be accessible.  It also presents the breadth of contemporary art available and hopes to inspire new collectors by offering top quality art at affordable prices.

Swab was first held in 2007, with the participation of 42 galleries from 13 different countries and had over 6,000 visitors, contributing in this way to Barcelona's cultural scene, with a new Contemporary Art Fair.

In 2008, Swab consolidated its position in the international art fair scene, bringing together 38 emerging galleries from 11 different countries and this time getting over 8,000 visitors.
In 2010, after a necessary pause, Swab reaffirmed its place as the International Contemporary Art Fair of Barcelona with the participation of 32 galleries from 11 countries and was well received by the public in Barcelona, Spanish and International, receiving this time more 13,000 visitors. In 2011 Swab took a step forward and grew up to 48 galleries from 15 different countries and was hold in a bigger venue, with more art spaces and presenting for the first time the Swab Off activities' program, with a great success in Barcelona.

Swab returns to Barcelona for it's fifth year, once again growing in scale and reputation, with around 60 galleries from around the world signed up to participate, making Swab Barcelona 2012 bigger and better than ever before. Through collaboration with other International Art Fairs, such as Preview Berlin: The Emerging Art Fair, Swab Barcelona ensures every year the presence of some selected galleries from Germany or Italy, but also from the United Kingdom and the United States. For this fifth edition, Swab Barcelona will also present a selection of Art Project spaces, curated by renowned Independent Insitut of Criticism and Contemporary Art in the world of Catalan culture, A-Desk.

Swab Barcelona 2012 will also see the launch of many new initiatives; the fair will be hold in the same venue of last year, but moving its entrance to plaza Universo, a multidisciplinary space with several activities that Swab visitors will be able to enjoy during the days of the Fair.

After its great success, Swab Barcelona 2012 will again be running a parallel programme of cultural activities under the SwabOFF including several fund-raising enterprises for Barcelona based charities. We will very soon announce these activities at this website and at our Blog, as well as at our facebook and twitter pages!

DUTY FREE, Katia Kameli

l'importante installation multicanal Seven Acts of Love in Seven Days of

Barcelona, Catalonia / 'Retrospective' by Xavier Le Roy at Fundació Antoni Tàpies

Retrospective by Xavier Le Roy / Fundació Antoni Tàpies / Barcelona, Catalonia

"Retrospective" by Xavier Le Roy is an exhibition conceived as a choreography of actions that will be carried out by performers for the duration of the exhibition. These actions will compose situations that inquire into various experiences about how we use, consume or produce time.

This exhibition employs retrospective as a mode of production rather than aiming to show the development of an artist's work over a period of time. It seeks to recast the material from the solo choreographies in situations with live actions where the apparatuses of the theater performance and the museum exhibition intersect. Based on solo works by Xavier Le Roy created between 1994 and 2010, the work unfolds in three time axes: the duration of the visit composed by each visitor, the daily basis of labor time of 16 performers and the time of the growth of a new composition during the length of the exhibition.

With 6 to 7 performers alternating with each other: Idurre Azkue, Quim Bigas, Cristina Blanco, Pere Faura, Sergi Faustino, Núria Gregori, Mizar Martínez, Guillem Mont de Palol, Elena Murcia, Mariona Naudin, Cristina Nuñez, Aimar Pérez, Karolina Rychlik, Clara Tena, Carme Torrent, Javier Vaquero

Xavier Le Roy

Xavier Le Roy holds a doctorate in molecular biology from the University of Montpellier, France, and has worked as a dancer and choreographer since 1991. He has performed with diverse companies and choreographers. From 1996 to 2003, he was artist-in-residence at Podewil, Berlin. In 2007-2008 he was "Associated Artist"at Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier, France. In 2010 Le Roy is an Artist in Residence fellow at the MIT Program in Art Culture and Technology (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Through his solo works such as Self Unfinished (1998) and Product of Circumstances (1999), he has opened new perspectives in the field of choreographic art. His latest works are the solos Le Sacre du Printemps (2007) and Product of Other Circumstances (2009), the group piece low pieces (2011), and "production" created together with Mårten Spångberg for the exhibition Move: Choreographing You. In 2012 he will premiere a piece for exhibition spaces, "Retrospective" by Xavier Le Roy at the Fundació Antoni Tapies, Barcelona.

New York, USA / Bankrupt Banks at Peter Blum Gallery

Bankrupt Banks at Peter Blum in Chelsea, New York.

March 1st - April 14
Opening on March 1st, from 6 to 8 p.m

Bankrupt Banks is a new series of work that portray and explore the
international financial crisis since 2008.

The work are banners painted with logos of banks that were declared bankrupt
and were acquired by other banks, governments or private entities.
Originally designed to convey strength, authority and confidence, these now
defunct symbols become portraits of failed power structures.

Beginning with the acquisition of the British mortgage lender, Alliance and
Leicester by Grupo Santander on July 14, 2008, the series acts as a sort of
timeline, charting the collapse and subsequent reconfiguration of major
international financial markets. While all of the works are unique, the

London, England / The Right to Silence II

THE RIGHT TO SILENCE II
A Seminar with Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Patrick Hanafin, Anne Karpf and Susan Schuppli

Saturday 25 February, 4.30pm
The Showroom, 63 Penfold Street, London NW8 8PQ
Free, all welcome

The Right to Silence II expands on the research and polemics at the core of Lawrence Abu Hamdan's 'Aural Contract' project, focusing on the politics of listening and the role of the voice in law. The day brings together a series of talks and discussions by scholars, artists and writers who will reflect on speech and what it reveals about us as legal subjects.

The Right to Silence II opens with an introduction by Abu Hamdan to his 'Aural Contract Audio Archive', a compilation of forensic listening content developed by the artist, followed by presentations by Patrick Hanafin, Professor of law and Director of the Centre for Law and the Humanities at Birkbeck and Susan Schuppli, artist and Senior Research Fellow at Goldsmiths. The day, which includes talks and an open discussion will be moderated by sociologist, writer and broadcaster Anne Karpf.

About the Talks:

Patrick Hanafin, 'From Confession to Contestation: The Right to Unexpected Speech'
During the seminar Patrick Hanafin will turn to the question of extorting speech as a mode of control, looking in particular at the work of Maurice Blanchot. In his contribution, 'From Confession to Contestation: The Right to Unexpected Speech', Hanafin will explore the voice and speech in this context by asking, 'why does law want us to speak and to what end?', 'how does law make us speak?' and 'how can we resist and refuse to speak?'.

Susan Schuppli, 'Some Sinister Force'
In her contribution, Susan Schuppli focuses upon the 18 - 1/2 minute tape-gap in Watergate Tape 342, which was believed to be an act of clumsy erasure by Nixon in 1972. It was the presumed retraction of evidence - the recorded voice on tape and its subsequent removal - that transformed this tape into evidence, which in turn produced a new legal forum around the tape-gap, one that brought forensic science and expert witnesses (audio technologists) into the trial. Once the existence of the Whitehouse tapes was known, Nixon's human testimony (his refusal to speak on the grounds that such testimony might be incriminatory) became largely irrelevant as the subpoenaed material witnesses - the tapes - could now speak in his stead. The absent recording, which mapped precisely onto the timeline of the break-in at Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel, had converted non-evidence into such compelling and incriminatory material evidence, that it in part activated the moves towards Presidential impeachment.

The Right to Silence is realised as a collaboration between Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Electra and The Showroom. The Right to Silence accompanies Abu Hamdan's exhibition at The Showroom, Aural Contract: The Freedom of Speech Itself (1 February - 17 March). The exhibition includes The Freedom of Speech Itself, an audio documentary directed by the artist, looking at the history and contemporary application of forensic speech analysis and voice-prints, focusing on the UK's controversial use of voice analysis to determine the origins and authenticity of asylum seekers' accents. The exhibition is open Wednesday - Saturday, 12 - 6pm further information

Cologne, Germany / 'Groupshow' at Galerie Christian Lethert

GROUPSHOW
27.01. – 17.03.2012

We are pleased to announce our sixth group show including works by all artists of the gallery taking place during the Cologne Contemporaries weekend. For the first time in the gallery we present works by New York based artist Joe Fyfe (*1952) and London based artist Rana Begum (*1977). Both will open their first solo exhibitions in the gallery later this year.

Installation view, Groupshow;

Kai Richter, m, 2012, DOKA timbers, steel, 330 x 30 x 20 cm;
Max Sudhues, Trigger Copy, 2011, photo prints, 33 x 33 cm;
Rana Begum, No. 269, 2011, varnish on aluminum, 106 x 147 x 5 cm;
Jill Baroff, Conforming Pairs, 2001, graphite on Japanese Gampi paper, 41 x 41 cm.

In the entrance Düsseldorf based artist Kai Richter (*1969) clamps his installation m of yellow DOKA timbers between the gallery's ceiling and floor. The usually horizontally used building material in this work is used in a vertically, site-specific way.

On the right-hand side of the first room we present a three-part photo work by German artist Katharina Sieverding (*1944) of the series Sonne, die Erde imprägnierend (Sun impregnating the earth), which deals with the idea of men being bound into cosmic and energetic coherences. The mysterious light within the photograph arises from a solar eclipse – a covered light that erupts at the edges. The artist's face seems to lift up to unfold new energy. The self-portrait is overlaid by a grid of circles that evokes a serial order of suns, Sieverding also works on in her latest body of work in collaboration with the NASA.

Inspired by the everyday clutter of barely ordered chaos surrounding her in London, Rana Begum (*1977) seeks out instances that seem to accidentally make sense. Much of her work sits between wall based, and three-dimensional forms the viewer has to interact with and walk around to find his or her individual perfect position and notice anew the odd and often uncharacteristic glimpses of beauty that living in a city can provide. The work takes cues from built and urban environments, looking at color, line, form, and how they collide in the city. Representative for her aluminum works we present No. 269.

Max Sudhues' (*1977) photo collages Trigger Copy result from an intensive research process with copy machines and scanners. The light - Sudhues' preferred medium – is still present but not as an illuminant but in the shape of two-dimensional collages in which the palpating light extends the sculptural possibilities. Photographic motifs of the artist's collection of found images were copied and over-copied with oranges and nets. Every disturbance in the images, like scratches etc, originates in technical coincidences. Landscapes and architecture are combined with the orbs-like almost threatening oranges.

Jill Baroff's (*1954) drawings Conforming pairs are part of a body of work that she thinks of as "constructed" drawings. They all, in various ways, explore the physical properties and graphic possibilities of using a sheet of paper to draw itself. In conforming pairs, the larger of two sheets of Japanese Gampi paper must be folded to "conform" to the sheet of paper that it is paired with. It is the act of conforming that determines the image.

Berlin based artist Jorinde Voigt (* 1977) has been developing conceptual drawings on paper since 2002, referring to them as notations and scores. Voigt constructs an ordering system, as complex as it is individual, in order to survey invisible processes in our present day with a system of drawing-like codes. In the latest "Horizon" drawings the elementary horizon lines are drawn in possible horizon colors. The side-by-side of the possible lines results in an idiosyncratic complex of colors, which defines the possible scope of colors. This element bands together with themes of: melody, rotation, territory, continental border, center and direction.

Installation view, Groupshow;

Fergus Feehily, The Weight, 2009, oil on found frame, pencil, paper, 20 x 14 x 1.5 cm;
Gereon Krebber, Overhead, 2011, polyurethane, spray paint, 145 x 130 c 75 cm;
Jorinde Voigt, Horizons, 2011, ink, crayon, pencil on paper, each 61 x 46 cm.

In the last years we have shown two solo exhibitions with Berlin based Irish painter Fergus Feehily (*1968). In the group show we present one of his small-sized and delicate paintings: The Weight. The title stands contrary to the small and light pencil drawing in a found and repainted frame. Last year Fergus Feehily's works have also been exhibited in a solo show at the Dallas Museum of Art.

In the centre of the second gallery room stands Gereon Krebber's (*1973) new sculpture Overhead of polyurethane and spray paint. The cube seems to deform down into a worm-like bulk. With his mostly humorous form findings the Cologne based sculptor researches and makes use of uncommon materials such as gelatin, spray foam or plastic wrap.

Last autumn we have exhibited Daniel Lergon's (*1978) latest ANTUMBRA series of black paintings. For this year's group show we present a large-size metal pigment drawing by the Berlin based abstract painter. For these drawings, Lergon makes use of water diluted metal pigments he applies on the paper with large brushes. Contrary to his light reflecting paintings on retro reflexive material this body of metal pigment drawings seems to absorb the light completely.

New York based artist and art-critic Joe Fyfe (*1952) concerns himself with the principles of contemporary Vietnamese art which he constantly researches and absorbs in South-East-Asia. For years he has been exhibiting his work in Vietnam and has been collaborating with Vietnamese artists. His subtle collages, like Mixed Materials, are mostly made of rice paper, found cloth, wood, felt and wood.

On the front wall of the last room we present Weiss Schwarz by Düsseldorf based artist Imi Knoebel (*1940). Contrary to his usually colorful acrylic works on aluminum, Knoebel here puts next to each other one white and one black triangle that together build a minimalist trapezium.

Installation view, Groupshow;

Imi Knoebel, Weiss Schwarz, 2010, acrylic on aluminum, 229 x 281 x 7.5 cm;
Daniel Lergon, Untitled, 2012, metal pigment on paper, 204 x 204 cm.

During the last years Dutch artist Nelleke Beltjens (*1974) has been developing her unique concept of drawing. Among the basic principles of her work is the fragmentation of the line, which is questioned as a fundamental drawing element, breaking it up into numerous short marks that stand perpendicular to the extension of the line. Countless superimposed colorful "lines" running parallel and crosswise transform her drawings into a rhythmic cluster structure that is difficult to define. Turmoil #2 is full of movement, characterized by abrupt changes in direction and different degrees of intensity. Last autumn Nelleke Beltjens' work was shown in an exhibition together with drawings by Jorinde Voigt at the Belgium museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Deurle. This show will move to the Villa Zanders in Bergisch-Gladbach this summer.

In his water colors from the series Tiefe See (Deep Sea) Cologne based artist Lutz Fritsch (*1955) juxtaposes deep blue amorphous areas in opposition to red, straight sticks. These works were inspired by the artist's ongoing fascination of his travels to the Arctic/Antarctic. The indefinable forms of the surface of the deep blue sea are without any reference to known shapes. The red sticks function as a kind of reference point to these blue amorphous areas and try to control them.

We are very pleased to announce our participation in this year's ARCO in Madrid from 15 – 19 February 2012 again. Also we will again exhibit at the ART COLOGNE from 19 -22 April 2012. Further art fair participations are planned for NADA NYC, ART HONG KONG, VOLTA BASEL and NADA MIAMI.

Paris, France / Torbjørn RØDLAND

Torbjørn RØDLAND
Before Behind Above Below

Inauguración / Lugar a dudas

London, England / Bernhard Martin at Union Gallery

Bernhard Martin

Bell Cazzo – Vita Figa Part Two
Part Two: Drawing
Private View 26/01/2012 6–9pm
Exhibition dates 27/01/2012 – 17/03/2012

Union Gallery is pleased to present two consecutive solo exhibitions by Bernhard Martin (b. Germany, 1966). It is Martin's practice to work on a number of different series concurrently. The new works on display at Union belongs to the series 'The Dictatorship of the Hormones'.

The drawings on show in Bell Cazzo – Vita Figa: Part Two address the beauty of the coexistence of differences. We're dealing here with cravings, role-playing, longing, desire, self-abandonment and a thirst for déjà vu.

Martin asks us to consider the mindhungry traveller, a person with everything at their disposal who more often than not lacks happiness, contentment and a sense of belonging. The life journeys of Martin's characters are marked by rupture; theirs are not cosy, steadfast relationships, they are predictable only in their unpredictability. Inevitably these characters' stories always end in theatrical drama: lust, sex and murder, with jealousy after partner swapping, substitute lovers and parallel worlds..

In the new series of drawings of Martin freely interpreted the novel "Querelle" by Jean Genet. The sailor as romantic emblem of free thought, a travelling vagabond full of spirited energy and criminal desires to give up everything for the unrestrained obsession and disgrace. However Martin's point is not to quote or reproduce this novel directly; instead he is fascinated by how ideas are translated into a visual language and how psychological obsessions are revealed. He is interested in the freedom of thought, our filmic projections, the stories we construct to frame our lives. Martin looks for the hidden psychological side of the self and the self of others; it is a search for one's own alien abysses and desires, with one word >human mystery< always remaining 'Moralinfrei', bypassing spiteful moralising habits.

The drawings in this series are in pencil, on coloured canvas. Yet they seem smooth and spherical, bitter and sinister, ambiguous and peppered with a suspicious impenetrability.

Part Two: Drawing will be on show at Union from 26/01/2012 – 17/3/2012.

Porto, Portugal / Gerardo Burmester, Galeria Fernando Santos

Gerardo Burmester
2011, Alguns Trabalhos Revisitados

Chris Killip - arbeit/work
4. Februar 2012 - 15. April 2012

DEUTSCHALND SCHAFFT ES AB (GERMANY GETS RID OF IT) – BOOK COLLECTION CAMPAIGN

With over 1.3 million copies sold “Deutschland schafft sich ab“ (Germany gets rid of itself) by Thilo Sarrazin is the most successful non-fiction publication of a German author of the post-war period. The Czech artist Martin Zet now starts the campaign “Deutschland schafft es ab” (Germany gets rid of it) in the framework of the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. He calls to collect as many copies of the book as possible in order to get rid of them. “From a certain moment it is not important what the quality or real intention of the book is, but rather how it effects the German society. The book woke up and fed the anti-immigrant and mainly anti-Turkish tendencies in this country. I suggest using the book as an instrument enabling people to privately manifest their personal position,” Martin Zet states. The artist tries to collect at least 60,000 copies, which is in fact less than 5 percent of the total edition. The books will be shown in an artistic installation at the 7th Berlin Biennale; after the exhibition they will be recycled.
Help us to make this happen! Please deliver your copy in one of the participating collection points or send it to us via regular mail and let it become part of the installation.
